The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has signed a three-year deal with dns for managed security services. The Crown Office will use the popular Managed Security Monitoring service to increase security and gain maximum return from its previous security investments.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, solely responsible for prosecuting crime in Scotland, is based in Edinburgh and has many offices situated throughout Scotland. It handles a wide range of sensitive information on prosecutions, legal bodies and citizens and the majority of this information is held electronically. A security breach could have a major effect on the criminal justice system in Scotland.

dns will monitor a number of security devices, including intrusion detection systems, 24/7 from its Secure Operations Centre in Edinburgh. The dns managed security services team will detect and respond to any threats to the Crown Office as well as continually updating and configuring current security devices.

Commenting on the deal, Bill Reid the IT Operations Manager at the Crown Office said, “Our strategic aim is to provide an independent, modern prosecution service for the 21st century. To do this we must operate and interact online now more than ever. This makes us more efficient and improves service levels but also increases our level of risk. The information that we hold and communicate is information that we can not afford to compromise”

“Monitoring our environment during business hours in-house is difficult but monitoring it around the clock, 365 days a year is impossible. dns has a team of security experts that are highly skilled, understand our threats and  are ready to defend the Departmental network what ever the time of day or night. For the Crown Office, the use of the dns service is the most effective and efficient way to operate securely online.”

Graeme Cox, Managing Director at dns said, “Many organisations are turning to managed security service providers in order to increase security, cut costs and free-up internal resources. It is good news for dns as the Crown Office, with their high level of confidential information, trust our security team and are confident in our skills. Our expert team will work with the Crown Office 24/7 to make sure they are as secure as possible.”
